"Mr Hodge, having won the toss by a system of his own founded upon the differential calculus and the Copernican theory, sent in his opening pair to bat." Thus begins one of the most famous literary cricket matches, from the brilliant England, Their England, written in 1911 by A. G. Macdonell. I was lent a copy by my housemaster, Nigel Wheeler, while I was at Eastbourne; he thought the cricket match might appeal to me, as I was the scorer for the 1st XI. It was, quite simply, a perfect caricature of village cricket.
Nearly 20 years later, I'm delighted to have designed the reissue of England, Their England by the Oleander Press. It'll be released on 9 May.
